How Much Fertilizer Do You Need?

Pounds of product per 1,000 square feet = nitrogen pounds ÷ (nitrogen percent ÷ 100)

Sample bag, not a product we name: 1 pound of nitrogen and a bag that is 20 percent nitrogen means 5 pounds of product per 1,000 square feet. For 5,000 square feet that sample is 25 pounds. Twenty percent is a sample analysis you would read off a bag.

For a quick-release nitrogen product, keep a single application to 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. Rutgers NJAES FS839.

K-State Research and Extension lists 1 to 1.5 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet for cool-season grasses in fall. K-State Research and Extension.

A full-year nitrogen total that changes with the grass is not verified. Check the box only when the product is quick-release. If the nitrogen you typed is over 1 pound, the result says so.

Product Pounds at the 1 Pound Nitrogen Cap

Each row is 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet, which is the quick-release cap, applied to 1,000 square feet. The percent is a sample bag analysis.

Common Mistakes With the Lawn Fertilizer Calculator

  • Dividing by the percent instead of the fraction. 20 percent is 0.20, and 1 divided by 0.20 is 5.
  • Stacking a second quick-release application on the same visit. The cap is per application.
  • Looking up a yearly total by grass. That total is not verified here.
